Create: Collage

A collage is a piece of art made from different pieces of paper, photos and other materials.
Collages also might have painting and drawing on them.
Collage artists spend time arranging the materials and trying out different ideas, before sticking them onto a surface.

Find out about collages and how you can have a go with Oliver Jeffers
Oliver Jeffers: A collage is a picture made by sticking torn or cut up materials together.
To make a collage, you can use pieces of paper, card, or any other items you can find.
Some artists make collages using photographs, like Hannah Höch did. That type of collage is called photomontage.
Brianna McCarthy makes colourful pictures of faces using collage. And Kurt Schwitters made collages out ofthings other people had thrown away.
Right, I'm going to make my own collage.
To start with, I'll think about a theme or an idea. Then I'll sketch it out.
The next thing to think about is what to use to make it.
I've got some leftover materials, old pieces of paper and things like that, that I'm going to use.
I'm tearing and cutting pieces for my collage.
If you're having a go, you'll need help from a grown-up to use sharp scissors.
Before I glue them, I will lay out all my materials and move them around until I'm happy. Yes, that looks great!
Now all that's left to do is to stick them down using glue.
Okay, there we go! And piece by piece, I've made a house collage! I think it looks great.

Make your own collage
You can make a collage using pieces of paper that would otherwise be thrown away, such as envelopes and old newspapers. Make sure you ask an adult if you are not sure what to use.
Challenge
Brianna McCarthy is an artists known for creating collages of imaginary faces.
Create a collage of a face. It could be a family member, a friend, a famous person or somebody made up.

Go explore: Under the sea
Our oceans are full of creatures from tiny plankton to giant whales.
Fish are amazing. Learn all about them in the video below and then have fun with the activities.
From salmon to sharks - the different types of fish.
VOICEOVER: "Fish all live in water - some in the salty sea, and others in fresh water lakes and rivers.
They breathe through gills, little openings on the side of the head. Most fish are covered in scales that protect them and help them swim.
Salmon, born in British rivers, swim downstream to the sea and onto cooler water as far away as Canada. That's an amazing journey! Eventually, they'll go back to their own river, swimming and leaping back up to where they began life. Now, it's their turn to lay eggs that will hatch into young fish.
Tuna fish live in salty water. They're big. Sometimes even bigger than a man! And they're fast swimmers - just as well because sharks like to eat them.
Sharks hunt for food. They are predators. Inside their strong jaws are lots of strong pointy teeth. Pike are predators too and live in lakes. They have long, pointed heads and will lie, still and waiting, ready to catch a fish that's swimming close by.
Flat fish, like turbot and plaice, are good at hiding - they're camouflaged against the sandy bottom of the sea. A flat fish's mouth and both of its eyes are on one side of its body so it can see what's above it.
Angler fish live in deep water. they have what looks like a tiny fishing rod dangling over their mouth. Other fish come to see and get eaten.
Swimming together in shoals makes it harder for fish to be caught by predators but not by fisherman. Herring and mackerel swim in shoals.
Some fish never swim in the sea, or lakes, or rivers. They're pets, just like this goldfish."
Design: Sea creature
Design a creature to live under the sea. It could have lots of tentacles or shiny scales or even hundreds of eyes!Be as creative and imaginative as you like.
Use whatever art materials you like to create your own creature or print off the PDF below to add colour to a fish design.
Brain workout: Ocean poem
A poem can be about anything - a thought, an emotion or a story. They can be silly or serious.
Poems can rhyme, use alliteration or rhythm but they don't have to.
What is a poem?
This is a chef. He's not going to make food though. No. He is going to make a poem.
Stop that!
The main ingredient in a poem is words.
Poems can be about anything: they can tell a story or they can be a thought you had, or an emotion you felt.
But a poem can't exist without words.
So make sure you put plenty of them in.
THE! A! BUT! IS!
Some poems rhyme. That means words that sound the same.
Branch! Lunch!
Now we’re getting somewhere. Next we need rhythm.
So the words can sound fast like 'tiny speckled bird' or they can drag like 'the snake slides slowly'.
Season with alliteration…this is when you string together words which have the same first letter or sound, like 'the snake slides slowly'…and I think we’re done.
'The tiny speckled bird flits from branch to branch, The snake slides slowly looking for its lunch'.
Words, rhyme, and rhythm: that's how you make a poem.
Challenge:
Write a poem about life under the sea.
- Your poem can be as short or as long as you like.
- Try to include alliteration.
- Try to include rhyming words.
When you've written your poem, you could perform it out loud for your family or friends.
