Go explore: Amazing trees

There are so many trees around us that it is easy to take them for granted and forget what incredible living things they really are!

Trees help us live by taking in carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. They make shelters for animals and grow fruits and nuts we can eat. We get wood from trees as well.

Trees are also beautiful to look at and great to play in.

A view looking up at great redwood trees
Image caption,
Great Redwoods are the tallest type of tree. The tallest of them all is called Hyperion. It'snearly 400 feet high and is between 600 and 800 years old!

Find a tree and investigate

Find a tree near you that you like and investigate:

  • What shape are its leaves?
  • Can you fit your arms round the tree?
  • Is its bark rough or smooth?
  • Does anything live in the tree? Birds, squirrels or minibeasts?
  • Does it have any fruit?

Try drawing the tree, its leaves and anything that lives inside it.
