Analogue and digital time

Part of MathsTimeYear 4

What are analogue and digital clocks?

There are two types of clocks and they tell the time in different ways.

Analogue clocks have a face with numbers from 1 to 12 and two hands. The hands move and point to the numbers to show what time it is.

Digital clocks show the time using numbers on a screen.

Two analogue clocks with hands - a wristwatch and a wall clock. Two digital clocks - a digital clock displayed on a phone and a wristwatch.

Analogue and digital time

Digital and analogue clocks both show the time but in different ways.

With digital clocks, people usually read the time as the hour followed by the minutes.

When looking at an analogue clocks people often use the words 'past' and 'to' when telling the time. For example, by using phrases such as 'quarter past', 'half past', and 'quarter to' can be used.

Both of the clocks below show that it is 'half past 7'.

This is because the minute hand has travelled halfway around the clock. 30 minutes is half of one hour, so you can say that it is half past 7.

An analogue clock wit a short hand pointing halfway between 7 and 8 labelled 'hours' and the long hand pointing to 6 labelled 'minutes'. A digital clock displayed on a phone the number 07 is labelled hours this is followed by a colon and then 30 which is labelled minutes.

When it is later than half past the hour, you can say the time in a different way.

The next set of clocks both show that it is '5 minutes to 4'.

When you look at the analogue clock, you can say that the time is 'five to 4'.

When you look at the digital clock, you can say that the time is 3:55.

An analogue clock wit a short hand pointing to 4 labelled 'hours' and the short hand pointing to 11 labelled 'minutes'. A digital clock displayed on a phone the number 03 is labelled hours this is followed by a colon and then 55 which is labelled minutes.

Example 1

An analogue clock with its short hand pointing a small amount past 6 and the long hand pointing at two fifths of the way between 3 and 4. A digital clock is displayed on a phone. It shows the number 06 followed by a colon and then number 17.

What time do both of these clocks show?

Example 2

An analogue clock with its short hand pointing a small amount past 12 and the long hand pointing at 3. A digital clock is displayed on a phone. It shows the number 12 followed by a colon and then number 15.

Do both of these clocks say that it is quarter past 12?

Example 3

An analogue clock with its short hand pointing nearly at 3 and the long hand pointing at 10. A digital clock is displayed on a phone. It shows the number 02 followed by a colon and then the number 50.

Do these clocks both show the same time?
