Compare numbers to 10,000

Four-digit numbers can be partitioned into ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.
Understanding the value of each digit makes it easier to compare numbers using the less than (<), greater than (>) and equals symbols (=).
Once numbers have been compared, they can be ordered from the largest to the smallest, or from the smallest to the largest.

Place value when comparing
Understanding place value within a four-digit number makes it easier to compare numbers.
Take a look at these two numbers made with arrow cards.

By using arrow cards, a number can be partitioned into ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.

This makes it easier to see similarities and differences between the digits of each number.
When comparing numbers always look at the digit with the greatest place value first.
You can see that 6794 has more thousands than 8461.
Therefore you can write:

Example 1

Compare these numbers using the symbols >, < or =
✓ 5,635 > 5,535
5,635 is greater than 5,535.

Both sets of digits are the same except for the digits in the hundreds position, where one number is one hundred more than the other.
Example 2

Compare these numbers using the symbols >, < or =
✓ 2335 < 2435
In this example the thousands are the same, so you look at the hundreds next.
2335 has fewer hundreds than 2435, so you can say:
2435 is smaller than 2335.

Example 3

Which number is the largest?
✓ 3667
In this example the thousands are the same, so you look at the hundreds next.
3667 is the largest number, because it has more hundreds.
