Defence secretary nominee Pete Hegseth was the first of president-elect Donald Trump's cabinet picks to undergo a confirmation hearing ahead of the president's inauguration.

Hegseth, a Fox News presenter and veteran, was repeatedly questioned over previous comments that women should not serve in military combat roles with Democratic senators accusing him of an "11th-hour conversion."

The hearing was disrupted several times by protesters, who were removed by police.
