Northampton Town caretaker boss Ian Sampson will be mighty pleased with his teams effort tonight.

A rare win against local rivals after a tumultuous week turned upside down by the resignation of manager Jon Brady is not a bad way to start his third stint in charge.

For today, they win the bragging rights and go home in the safety of 17th on the league table.

Should we pronounce the river Nene as 'nen'? Maybe - at least until they face off again in the second round of the EFL Trophy on 17 December.

Steffan: This back four is killing us. Dornelly, not ready, Fernandez raw, Katongo doesn’t seem bothered and Sparkes is a League Two left-back, far too leggy. January recruits are very important to stabilise this team.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson, speaking to Sky Sports Football: "I'm very disappointed. It's another game where we've come away scratching our heads, wondering how we've lost it because we were the dominant team.

"Again, we lose two really, really poor goals. We had a big chances; two huge chances at 1-1. The one for Ricky[-Jade Jones] was the big one, and then [for the second] if Ricky just squares it to Malik [Mothersille], it's a tap-in - but he overhit it.

"We seem to find a way of conceding goals - very soft goals. I felt large parts of our game were good: we controlled the game, played the way we wanted to play and with a belief in how we played.

"We just have to keep working hard - there's no other recipe for it. We've got a tough challenge ahead.

"We're suffering here this season. It's very unusual for us, but we are. We're there for a reason. It's not just the goals we've conceded.

"We win and lose together. This is a big challenge and we've got to get through it - and I think we will.

"It's a normal week - nothing changes because of the result. We'll have recovery tomorrow and then we've got Crawley [at home] on Saturday.

"The results aren't going for us. That game probably sums up the season a little bit. Quite simply, we lost because we didn't do what we should have done in both boxes."

Peterborough will be back in the comforts of home turf as they host the new fourth from bottom team Crawley Town on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Northampton Town head on a trip to Rotherham in a bid to spark a winning run.

"I asked for honesty and the players certainly gave me that for the full 93 minutes.

"It was tough; we rode our luck a bit, with Peterborough shooting over the bar and having a couple of chances. We knew we had to do that; it was never going to be easy against the talented team they've got.

"We stuck at it and, if you keep going until the end, you're going to get your rewards.

"We've got a big game against Rotherham on Saturday so the lads will get a bit of rest tomorrow and then we'll be cracking on."

On how tonight compares to scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture in 2000: "I'm not sure it beats scoring at London Road when you're a player. It's very, very close to it, though."

Northampton attacker Tyler Roberts, speaking to Sky Sports Football about his assist for Cameron McGeehan's winner: "I was trying to get a shot off; I was trying to keep it alive, then I saw Cam in the corner of my eye.

"I knew if I got it to him he would tuck it away, which he's done all season.

"This game is like a double bonus for us - we get a win in the derby and it all looks better for us.

"It was a big game for us to go out, fight and get the win."

Northampton's victory over Peterborough moves them level on points with their East Midlands rivals and sailing away from the relegation zone.

Suffering the consequence are Bristol Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Rotherham and most notably Crawley Town, who sink into the bottom four.

Peterborough meanwhile will be rueing a missed chance to close in on the promotion play-offs - the place they'd like to be instead of dwelling among those at the bottom.

Northampton saw the threat of the pace in behind. They did run out of steam, but you saw them conserve their energy.

They made substitutions and got a bit of energy back. Northampton weren't brilliant and they came out with three points.

It is a tough one for Darren Ferguson. He wanted to bounce back after defeat to Burton.

It's been a bit miserable around the Peterborough camp. This will be a stomach blow to him.

For the second game in a row, we are stunned into disbelief as Peterborough are beaten by a side at the wrong end of the table.

After levelling in the first half, Peterborough were being the better side in the second.

Having squandered opportunities, their powderpuff defending returned again. They allowed a ball to bounce in the area and McGeehan scored again.

Peterborough look distraught. The players are looking at the ground in disbelief, like their confidence has been shattered.

The first Dene derby of the season goes to Northampton. How Darren Ferguson picks up his players from here is a real question.

It's a young group who've not been used to such difficult times. At key moments, they just melted.

The Northampton fans are singing "cheer up Barry Fry". Ian Sampson is orchestrating the celebrations. The goalkeeper is doing Jurgen Klopp celebrations.

You worry about where this group is going, with their fragility. A horrible, horrible night for Peterborough.

Northampton's Cameron McGeehan delivers a second goal to give his side their first win in six league games and take them out of the relegation zone.

It'll carry some sting for Peterborough, who could have snatched the lead should Ricky-Jade Jones' chance on the counter-attack have gone as expected and in the net rather than the stands.

The striker is looking particularly disappointed, hanging his head as he heads off this pitch but for the Cobblers, they are elated.

They the Posh on 21 points and go home with fans singing loud and joyously thanks to McGeehan's strike from the right.

Posh defender Jack Sparkes is withdrawn in place of midfielder Chris Conn-Clarke in a throw of the dice from Darren Ferguson.

The Cobblers have had some decent form at home. Their last league defeat here was on 1 October. Their away run has been their downfall.

They're on course for their first win in six league games.

The assist is Northampton's Tyler Roberts' final contribution and what a leaving gift indeed.

He's replaced with Martyn Waghorn while Matt Dibley-Dias is on for his first minutes since August.

He has improved but today he's not been at it when he should have scored, and he should have had that one on a plate for Malik Mothersille.

Peterborough amp up their efforts as Joel Randall, who is looking lively in this half, flicks the ball onto Ricky-Jade Jones.

The striker then crosses the ball towards Malik Mothersille in the box but his team-mate can't reach it and has to chase the ball down to keep their hopes alive.

It's getting close to crunch time now.

It's still open and either team could go and win it. They can sense that.

A shot on the spin from Peterborough's Joel Randall only meets yet another block and offers Northampton the opportunity to go on the counter-attack.

Unlike their opponents though, they don't have the pace and before they know it, there's blue shirts swarming their half.

Still, they are able to get themselves a corner.
