A huge day for Liverpool and their hunt for the Premier League title. They finish the weekend nine points clear of Arsenal and Chelsea in second and third, respectively, and 11 points clear of defending champions Manchester City.

Is it all over for Pep Guardiola's side? How significant a victory is this for the Reds?

Man City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The best team won, the first 10-15 minutes was almost unstoppable - it was so difficult."

On the poor performances: "They [players] help me. Three-to-four months ago we won Premier League, FA Cup semi-final and Champions League quarter-final.

"It wasn't a century ago, it was close.

"The situation from the beginning [of this season] was difficult for many reasons.

"I know the players want to do it for the club and me - there's no doubt about that.

"You have to turn it around and win games.

"The target is to try win the next game and go step-by-step."

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It has been a good week, but let's not get carried away too much.

"You saw when Darwin Nunez come on he had an impact in the game.

"There is so many games that have to be played. We have more than 11 players who can have an impact with our results that's what you saw today.

"It is a team performance that helps us bring these results."

On being concerned at 1-0: "I am concerned when you play City because they have unbelievable quality.

"What I liked most it wasn't us winning the game from just counter-attacking - we showed different qualities.

"In my opinion we were good in almost every aspect of the game."

On the title race: "It is a good position to be in. You guys know better than me that Arsenal and City are able to win every game from now till the end [of the season].

"Chelsea are able to win every game. It makes the Premier League so interesting - there's so many good teams.

"Last season there was a big difference in points between Arsenal and City and they were still able to come back."

I think they'll be in the Champions League because the best players they have perform. They're in a rut right now, Erling Haaland's not taking chances, players aren't performing to their level but there'll come a point when it will turn and Haaland will be flying.

I don't think Pep Guardiola can fix that in of midfield, this has been going on for four or five games. They need to buy players in there.

It may need to wait until the end of the season to fix this.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I congratulate Liverpool, they deserve the victory. The first 15-20 minutes they were unstoppable, we were lucky and they deserved the goal. Then we took the game in the circumstances that we have. They are stronger than us and we needed a game of more control. I thank a lot of my players, like Bernardo and Manuel Akanji, for playing positions that we're not used to. The second half is who we are. They pushed a lot and the second half and the last 20 minutes of the first half was good, without too much threat. They are strong in both boxes like we aren't at the moment. We will reset and start the seaosn from there.

"My players wanted it but it is not easy because they are aggressive and faster. We will continue with that and restart from here.

"The results will help us to see more. I have to see the players come back and be better and better physically. It is difficult in the middle of the season because we cannot change. It is another one and we cannot expect more than this.

"You have to understand what we have done. The players want it, they suffer it and they want to do it. It is normal. We're not used to this for many reasons, but many, many things happen. Teams are good and we can't handle it right now. I have to find a solution to be solid, in behind particularly. What can I say? These players have given me the chance to live maybe the best years of my life. All I can do is be here to try and find a solution. In the right moment the club will take a decision about what is needed to allow this club to still be there."

We have to praise the manager he's done an amazing job, they were a decent group he took over.

If you would've said at the start of the season Liverpool would be where they are now you wouldn't believe them, you'd think they need locking up. But their performances, defensively, they're very good. Their big players are turning up for the big occasion.

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot to BBC Match of the Day: "At the end the result is the most important but the performance was great. If you want to win against a team like City you have to be good at every part of football. So high defending, low defending, build-up, high, low, everything. Because they bring so many challenges to you.

"I think we weren't perfect but we came quite close to managing it all.

"In every game you want to start in the best possible way, but we did start the way we wanted it. That always helps because if you start poorly the fans are against you. If you start like this it gives energy to the players. They see the game plan is ok for them, so they created chances like this. And also with the crowd behind you that also gives you extra energy."

Did Liverpool waste chances? "That's true. Although I watched this game every time when I was not working here so maybe this game deserved the way it went because it was special until the end. But if you only look at it from a Liverpool perspective, it would not have been strange if we were two goals up at half-time or any other point of the game.

"City were dominating possession but still the chances were for us.

"You have 90 minutes of concern when you play City because they can cause you troubles or problems in every single second of the game. Even if you are 2-0 up you think like this. I saw a game with my former club doing something special. But no, you never feel comfortable when you play City because of the quality of their players and their manager."

On staying cool and calm: "That's what I'm trying. During the games these managers bring you a lot of problems in the Premier League, they're all great managers. And the players that play here make it difficult as well. So you have to be calm and collected and see what happens.

"You just try to prepare your team in the best possible way and not get too carried away with a win or a loss."

Mohamed Salah’s assist for the opener was his 75th for Liverpool in the Premier League, which saw him overtake Thierry Henry’s tally for Arsenal (74) on the list of most assists for a single club in the competition.

I think they need a defensive midfielder. A defensive-minded midfielder. When you look who they have now, you've got Matheus Nunes. Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, the list goes on, the majority of those players are attacking-minded or control players.

It was a difficult game today, it was always going to be in our best moments and has been since I've been here, even in our best moments, this has always been a tough place to come, and even more now in our circumstances. I am seeing through it and I saw a lot of character today and that is something that gives me a good feeling for what is ahead.

"Winning is all about that. We have a lot of winners in our dressing room. In times like this it is all about mentality and keep on going and pushing and thinking one game at a time. Nottingham Forest is all that is on our mind and we want to win and that is how you break it. Today I saw little things that will help us move forward.

"This is just part of our legacy. We've won so much and still we are where we are and this happens. It is more about building and building the legacy. These tough moments will never stop coming in football. Football is the perfect example of life, sometimes life seems easy but it slaps you in the face and football is the perfect example of that. That is why we win again and again, we've been able to be versatile, adapt and keep on moving forward and thinking one game at a time. That is what we need to get back to. This is all about our legacy and building that and believing in it.

Liverpool

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about starting the game: "I mean, obviously we know what it is like with a relentless schedule. You never want to see teammates get injured, Ibrahima Konate has been unbelievable.

"I understand what it means to be ready and to stay consistent throughout the season as it can change so quickly.

"I have enjoyed it and I have to keep on working."

On nerves during the game: "I would be lying if there wasn't.

"When we missed a few big chances and it was 1-0 it can change so quickly. The players they bring on from the bench, they can change it at any moment - I was a bit worried.

"When we got that second one we were more relaxed."

On being nine points clear: "At the start of the season if you said we'd be in this position we would bite your hand off.

"It means nothing at this point, come the end of the season if we are not lifting the trophy it will feel like we have squandered a big opportunity.

"The Premier League is so relentless and we have big comes up."

On Arne Slot: "I think the biggest thing is he's not trying to fill Jurgen's shoes or be Jurgen.

"Jurgen's legacy is stamped in the history of the club and that cannot be changed.

"He [Arne Slot] has been himself, it has been refreshing and all the coaching staff have been positive.

"Today was about hard work and working harder than them. The work is not done and we have not won anything - it is a great start and he's constantly reminding us about going again.

"He know we have experience in the squad and he is just on us."
