Tyrrell's troubles are finally over on the 18th. He chips up to about three feet with his sixth shot and knocks in with his seventh shot on the par-four hole.

I don't know whether this is good news or not for the Englishman, but it's his ninth hole of the round. The glass half full brigade will say plenty of time to recover. The glass half empty will say tough to get the mind back in shape.

Adam Scott is also dropping shots. A lengthy par putt pulls up three feet short and he pushes the bogey putt long. Double for the Aussie.

Unlike Tyrrell Hatton, Aaron Rai's expression is pretty unreadable but he has slipped back from the lead after a mistake at the eighth.

Left with a 15 footer for par from the edge of the green, he leaves it left and has to settle for a bogey.

No-one able to really reel Jhonattan Vegas in at the moment.

The Quail Hollow rough on the 18th is getting the verbal treatment from Tyrrell Hatton, who then has an annoyed swish at it too with his club.

He needs to get his emotions in check here.

His ball was indeed wet, and after taking a penalty drop he advanced his ball from the left rough to rough down the right, 30 yards short of the green.

Then, his fourth shot barely makes it out of the long grass and pulls up short of the green. The angry swish follows.

But then more trouble. His fifth shot is shy of the hole and starts to trickle back off the green. This is turning into a disastrous hole.

Not the best drive on 10 from Cam Davis as he blazes it into the righ rough, but he lays it up nicely and then finds the green to leave a 20 foot birde putt.

It doesn't land but it's a simple enough par in the end. You'd prefer to pick up shots on these pars fives but he was up against it after his tee shot.

Oooh... this doesn't look great for Tyrrell Hatton on the 18th tee. The ball tracker suggests his ball is heading left, which is bad news. There's deep rough and a stream meandering through the middle of it.

The ball disappears from view. No splash. But it looks likely to be wet. Tyrrell gives his driver a long hard stare and then starts chuntering to it.

The best player on the course right now?

Max Homa. He has blitzed his first nine holes in six under par, producing a majestic chip from the front of the green to walk off the 18th with yet another birdie.

His score of -6 is twice as good as anyone else out there.

And at four under par for the tournament, he is very much in this.

A bit of good and bad for the leader on the third, as he finds a fairway, but then hits the greenside bunker with his approach.

Back to the good then tnough with a lovely escape from the trap and salvages his par with just a tap-in needed for a four.

He's scrambling about a bit but there's some decent stuff in there.

Collin Morikawa's 20-footer on the 16th is tracking nicely and in it pops for a birdie three. The 16th was playing as one of the hardest holes on the course on day one.

Justin Thomas has hit a high-tariff flop shot over the bunker, his ball bouncing on the fringe of the green and tip-toeing eight feet past the hole. Big par save putt coming up for JT... pulled it. Shot gone.

Tyrrell Hatton, matching a white-spotted blue shirt with purple tros, is over his nine-footer for birdie on the 17th.

Sets the ball out to the left and watches as it catches the slope and curls into the middle of the cup. He's suddenly one back.

Ludvig Aberg has got one of the best swings in the game, certainly one of the most effortless, and he's such a huge talent - as he's just shown on the 14th.

As the Swede has fizzed in a belter of a pitch shot from 70 yards that he's brought to attention with enough Scandinavian swazz on it to stop just three feet away for an easy birdie.

Composure from Aaron Rai on the seventh green as he moves himself another spot up the leaderboard.

That birdie putt gets him in striking distance of leader Jhonattan Vegas.

The Englishman refusing to go away.

Justin Thomas is in the deep stuff to the right of the 16th fairway but he's not hacking out. Just 205 yards to the pin but he's perhaps wary of tugging it left with water waiting for errant shots and he leaves his ball out right in more rough. Delicate chip over a bunker to come.

Playing partner Collin Morikawa finds the heart of the green from the heart of the fairway. This hole was the scene of #mudballgate yesterday but all looking good so far today.

Extraordinary scenes down the left side of the 18th fairway as American Lucas Glover takes off his socks and shoes and enters the water to get a stance for his shot.

His ball is thick in the rough and he has no choice but to get his feet wet if he's going to play it out.

Into the creek he goes, out clunks his ball and he's safely onto the fairway.

For a man who flubbed two chips just a couple of holes ago, that's a remarkable effort from Viktor Hovland out of the right rough at the 14th - sending the ball high into the sky and landing it softly on the green with a bit of run to leave I'd say about 12 feet for a birdie on this short par four.

Is that a smile that hangs beneath his nose?

Tyrrell Hatton with a pin-seeker on the short 17th that almost drops in the hole on the third bounce.

Sensational from the Ryder Cupper, although his ball trundles a bit to leave a nine-footer for birdie.

Playing partner Adam Scott is also on the green but will have a 25-footer.

Cam Davis has been going along pretty nicely this morning, he's had just one birdie and one bogey to complete his front nine in a level-par 35.

Decent conditions out there and the front nine is a touch easier so maybe he could have scored better, but being at the sharp end at a major is not something he's used to so that's not too shabby at all.

Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas are both on the par-five 15th green in three.

Both have makeable birdie putts, up the hill.

2020 champion Morikawa up first. A little too firm and the ball sidles by. Par.

2017 and 2022 champion Thomas from a little closer in, perhaps eight feet. Also bold. Par

Our leader Jhonattan Vegas drops a shot at the second hole as his putter can't rescue him this time, with a wildly breaking short putt swinging away to the right of the cup.

Vegas just needs to settle himself here to avoid a big slip.

Another birdie for Max Homa who is absolutely flying out there at the moment.

We shouldn't be surprised. He's got a stellar record at Quail Hollow, having won here in 2019 and boasting two other top-10 finishes in four appearances.

He's five under through eight holes and up to three under par.

I'd like a slice of whatever he had for breakfast.

The Englishman looks away in disgust as his ball leaks out to the left. But that's not as bad as he's making it out to be. He's on the dancefloor, pin-high, 30 feet from the hole. Wish my bad shots were that poor.
