There has been criticism of the setup [of the course] but right now we've got a very mixed leaderboard.

It's certainly not playing how we're used to it playing, with such dominance from the players who are really good drivers of the ball. There are a number of guys who are not necessarily that long.

It's producing a mixed leaderboard, with the guys we're now following making a bit of a charge.

We're starting to see the top players in the world creep up the leaderboard as we head towards the weekend.

Alex Smalley goes long and right of the 12th green - and you just can't miss it there with a front left flag perched on that huge slope, so there's no surprise he leaves his chip shot well short.

That means a stinker of a downhill putt for par though, and he can't make it so drops a shot for the second time today.

Rory McIlroy is in thicker stuff down the left of the ninth but sends an iron shot spiralling towards the green anyway.

He negotiates the front left bunker but there's just a lack of control and his ball chases through the green.

No need to worry mind, a little chip and run pulls up a couple of feet from the hole and it's par saved.

Scottie Scheffler is continuing in his normal metronomic style, zinging his second pin high to the right of the flag.

The par-five 10th hole is a good scoring opportunity today and England's Matt Fitzpatrick has tapped in his short birdie putt to move back within three of the lead.

Harry Hall is only on his sixth hole of but the Englishman could prove to be the Johnny Vegas of the second round.

Vegas kept us all hanging round late last night as he went on that five birdies in six holes blitz.

And Hall is mooching up the leaderboard with two birdies in his opening five holes and he's looking at another on the par-five 15th after sticking his third to about five feet.

Pushed it. Par.

Another bogey for Luke Donald on the par-four third but the Englishman goes pin-seeking on the next.

He birdied this hole in round one and he does so again today after firing his tee shot in to about three feet.

It moves him back above Keegan Bradley, who has had two bogeys and four pars so far today.

Rory McIlroy's short game is really something else. The current Masters champion zips a wedge into five feet and then drops in a tricky putt for a second consecutive birdie.

He looks like a man on a mission and he may need to be as Scottie Scheffler drops in a putt from just inside 10 feet for his three.

Ben Griffin is on fire at Quail Hollow as the American has gone birdie-eagle on the 14th and 15th to hit four under after only six holes of his second round.

After a first-round 70 he's now on five under for the tournament and only three shots off the lead.

Par saves for Matt Fitzpatrick and Jon Rahm on the ninth and both reach the turn in one under par.

Barring something ridiculous on the back nine, they both should be around for the weekend - the next objective after that is to try to eat into Jhonattan Vegas' lead.

Shane Lowry is probably going to need to play the back nine under par if he wants to be around for the weekend.

Bogeys on six and eight have sandwiched a birdie on seven as he went out in level par.

Is the eighth green reachable on the 353-yard par four? This celebrated trio, who happen to be the three best players on the planet - according to the world rankings - think so, but all three come a cropper.

Missing left here is the way to go apparently and Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele oblige and almost the TV camera crews situated by a huge tree near the putting surface.

Another birdie for Alex Smalley! There's not much of him but he's whipped his drive 311 yards and muscled his second shot 285 from the fairway before getting down in two for the birdie on the par five.

'More meat on a butcher's pencil' comes to mind, but the wiry Smalley can really send it.

Wondering if Scottie Scheffler (day one) and Rory McIlroy (day two) are using the same tailor.

Does this mean if I get myself a burnt orange golf polo, my game will get supercharged?

All the gear etc etc.

Here's Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin chatting to BBC Sport NI after securing his place for the weekend at one under par:

"I ground it out well. The greens are very firm and some of the pins are hard. It's very easy to miss them and have no shot. You have to play smart, make par and get birdies when you can.

"Conditions were good. The wind was swirling around a bit so it was quite tricky but besides that, can't ask for not much better weather.

"I guess I've learned my game is in quite good shape. I'll try and sharpen a few things for tomorrow."

Ryan Fox early yesterday with a flying start? Well, he's still hanging on in there three under after a birdie on the 10th.

The New Zealander dropped two shots on his front nine, after shooting 67 yesterday, but that birdie puts him back into T12 and not a million miles away.

Rory has got that pep in his step back. He's striding out and he looks very at ease with the position he's in.

It looks like he feels he's going to make the cut, he knows that he's still in this tournament and he's trying to put it all together. He's looking very confident.

Scottie Scheffler is on the green in three but faces a long birdie putt. It'll just a par for the two-time Masters champion.

Rory McIlroy pockets a birdie though clipping past the pin and then knocking in the return putt for a valuable four. Is the Northern Irishman building some momentum?

And fair play to Xander Schauffele, who chips in off the back of the green to save par and remain at three over. That could prove priceless after finding the water a few shots back.

Bob MacIntyre is taking the scenic route down the tough par-four 16th. He's long and right with his second shot and his gouge out of the rough sees his ball trickle in to six feet from the hole.

But he's not knocking that one in. Back to where he started.

Jon Rahm makes it two birdies in a row, picking up another shot on the eighth to move to two under. Are we about to see one of the Spaniard's trademark charges?

But bad news for fans of Matt Fitzpatrick, as a short par putt lips out and he's back to four under par.

Leader Jhonattan Vegas has been speaking after his one-under round of 70:

"It means a lot. This is what we put all those hours in for. You put all those hours in to give yourself chances like this. Unfortunately I haven't been able to do it throughout my career, but you never know. You've got to keep the pedal down, keep your head down, and keep working hard. You never know when things are going to turn your way.

"It's been very, very annoying, especially knowing I have the game to compete in these big events. I feel like my game is very complete, but I just haven't been able to put it all together in a major.

"I think I've been patient enough to not really get too down on myself for not playing well at majors. I've played good at The Players, at some good, big tournaments, but never a major, right?

"Like I said, it's just kind of one of those things that you've just got to keep learning about yourself and what it takes to play good here. Unfortunately, it's taking me a little bit longer than usual, but I'm glad that I'm in this position right now."
